Influence of seasonal variability of precipitation and temperature on performances of pawpaw varieties intercropped with cucumber

Field experiments conducted in Abeokuta, Nigeria evaluated the influence of differences due to the season on 2 pawpaw (Carica papaya L.) varieties (‘Sunrise solo’ and ‘Homestead selection’) in cropping mixture with cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) var. ‘Market-more’ (pawpaw-cucumber mixed or planted sole) across 3 seasons. Repeated-measures analysis (RM), Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Two-Way analysis of variance were used for the evaluation of the 3 × 2 × 2 factorial experiment arranged in randomized complete block design replicated thrice. The results showed that juvenile pawpaw in year-two environmental conditions of moderate precipitation and better temperature, and mature pawpaw in year-three of upper precipitation and moderate temperature had improved vegetative growth performances, nevertheless in fruitful growth pawpaw in year-two through interaction of precipitation and lower temperature obtained a lot of flowers, higher fruit setting rate and heavier fruit yield than those in years-one or –three.
