Reducing Steel Scrap in Fabrication of Steel Storage Tanks: A Recent Study

The goal of this paper is to reduce steel scrap during the fabrication of steel storage tanks. Reducing steel scrap is critical for society’s environmental impact, natural resource conservation, and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and energy use associated with steelmaking, which is a valuable resource in industry. The “4Rs,” or Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Restore the content, are called solid waste management techniques. Any product’s output generates waste, which has no economic value for the main manufacturing process, but certain waste goods have an economic value that can be enhanced by processing. In this paper, a proposed method for reducing steel scrap in terms of area, volume, and weight in order to save money and adopt sustainability is discussed. This approach focuses on the steel products industry and aims to expand the use of steel scrap. A technique for reducing steel scrap is suggested and tested on a case study that involves the Heavy Engineering Equipment State Company producing 17 storage tanks with a capacity of 55 m3 (HEESCO). Each area’s scrap value, length, and weight are determined. In the current situation, the percentages of area, volume, and weight of plates used are (13.609 percent), (15.875 percent), and (15.875 percent, respectively. The percentages of area, length, and weight of plates used after implementing the proposed method are (6.666%), (8.154%), and (8.153%), respectively. The improvement rate in reducing steel scrap produced is (51.017%) of area (48.636% ) and volume (48.642% ). In the steel fabrication industry, this amount of improvement rate and the evaluation of the steel scrap produced are considered a valuable resource.
